Scientific Leadership in Peptide Innovation: Inside GENOPEP’s Advisory Board

In the supplier world, there’s something you don’t often come across: the person on the other end of the phone isn’t a salesperson or a customer service rep, but a scientist who has spent decades studying peptides.

That’s exactly who you’ll find on GENOPEP’s advisory board. They aren’t just names on a letterhead. They’re actively involved, helping us work through the problems that get us stuck. Let me introduce you to them.

In peptide research circles, Professor Christopher Shaw’s name is well known.

Back in the day, finding bioactive peptides in nature was a painstaking process. You’d collect samples, grind them up, run assays, and hope for the best. Professor Shaw changed that. He developed a method that became the global standard for extracting bioactive peptides—and labs around the world still use it today.

I once asked him what it felt like to make that breakthrough. He just shrugged. “You find one thing, then you find the next.” That’s him. Decades of groundbreaking work, and he talks about it like it’s just one step after another.

He’s still at it at Queen’s University Belfast. Still discovering new structures. Still figuring out what they can do. And when we hit a wall on a project—something tricky, something where the literature doesn’t match reality—he’s the one we call.

Discovery is one thing. Turning that discovery into something useful is another. That’s what Professor Tianbao Chen does.

Professor Chen is an expert in anticancer peptides, antimicrobial peptides, and peptide antibiotics. His titles include Professor at Queen’s University Belfast, Director of the Natural Drug Discovery and Peptide Research Centre, and lead coordinator of the Jiangsu Provincial Joint Laboratory for Animal-derived Traditional Chinese Medicine and Functional Peptides. He’s also a visiting professor at Jilin University, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, and Shenyang Pharmaceutical University.

What sets him apart is his focus on translation. He knows that a peptide that looks good in an academic paper is just the beginning. What really determines whether it becomes a product are the things that come later—stability, delivery, manufacturing.

As a GENOPEP advisor, this is exactly what Professor Chen helps us with. His guidance ensures that the peptides we develop aren’t just scientifically interesting, but practical—stable, manufacturable, and effective in real formulations.

Dr. Ge’s background is in peptide science. He earned his PhD in Pharmacy from Queen’s University Belfast, studying alongside the very experts who would later become GENOPEP’s scientific advisors.

His research focused on how peptides behave in biological systems—their stability, their activity, and their potential for use in therapeutics and skincare. This foundation in basic science, combined with his expertise in natural peptide structure modification, all came into play later when he started developing products.

What Dr. Ge does is connect deep analytical expertise with practical application. He understands peptides at the molecular level—not just how to make them, but how to modify them to make them more stable, more active, and better performing in real formulations.

This kind of pharmaceutical-grade rigor is rare in the cosmetic ingredients world. Most suppliers can sell you a peptide. But very few can tell you exactly what that peptide is, how to improve it, and how it will behave in your formulation.

What makes this scientific team truly special isn’t just their individual expertise. It’s that they’ve known each other and worked together for years. They trust each other.

Dr. Ge studied under Professors Shaw and Chen at Queen’s. They’ve collaborated on projects, published papers, built relationships. This isn’t an advisory board where names are rented for credibility. It’s genuine collaboration between scientists who respect each other and share a common vision: bringing pharmaceutical-grade peptide science into skincare.

Because of this team—scientists who have literally written parts of the textbook—GENOPEP never just hands you a spec sheet when you come to us with complex R&D needs. We give you a complete scientific rationale. We understand that what you need isn’t just a kilogram of raw material, but a technical foundation that will help your product succeed in the market. This rigor, born in the lab, is at the core of how GENOPEP serves partners around the world.
