Choosing a supplier isn’t like ordering from a menu. Pick the right one, and you have a partner who can grow with you. Pick the wrong one, and you’re in for delays, quality issues, and reformulation headaches.

These five questions have saved me—and our clients—more times than I can count.

1.1 Question 1: “What’s actually behind your purity number?”

Purity isn’t a single number. It’s a story.

A good supplier will show you the HPLC chromatogram. They’ll tell you what’s in the baseline, whether there are isomers their method can’t separate, and how much residual solvent is present.

What to look for: Complete transparency.

1.2 Question 2: “Can you scale with me?”

Your needs today aren’t your needs next year. You need a supplier who can handle both ends of the spectrum—milligrams for development and kilograms for commercial production—with the same quality standards and documentation throughout.

1.3 Question 3: “What if I need something different?”

Does the supplier have real custom synthesis capabilities? Ask about their experience with modifications: palmitoylation, acetylation, cyclization. True custom capability means they can solve problems for unique sequences while respecting confidentiality.

1.4 Question 4: “What happens after I buy?”

Does the relationship end when the shipment arrives? For a true partner, that’s when the real work begins. What technical support do they offer? If you run into formulation issues, who do you call? A supplier who disappears after the sale is just a vendor.

1.5 Question 5: “Can you show me the documentation?”

When shipments get held up at customs. When regulators start asking questions. That’s when documentation becomes everything.

Ask to see a sample Certificate of Analysis. Is it detailed, or just a number? Do they keep batch records? If you’re exporting, do they have the regulatory files ready?
